So the very first project we started in our new house back in August 2011 was...knocking a wall down! Kind of a big project to start right away... However I had it planned from the first time we toured our house. I knew that I wanted a master bedroom with a walk in closet and an ensuite bathroom. Most Capecods in our area only have two bathrooms but ours had a third one on the main floor so I decided that we should enclose the full bath into our bedroom. So basically we took a hallway, a bathroom, a pantry, four closets, and two bedrooms and made it our master suite!
Now although this was our first project it wasn't entirely DIY. The wall that we took down between the two bedrooms was load bearing. So NOT something you should do on your own. Lucky for us my father in law and his friend are professionals so they did the beam part for us.
We started knocking the wall down the week after moving in. That was also the weekend that Hurricane Irene happened. And knocked out our power for SIX days. That put a damper on the project.
However all the dust was cleared and dry-walling down by October when we were able to paint and move in to the master.
Total cost for this project was $1000 for labor and supplies. And now we have a huge bedroom!
Now for lots of construction pictures....

Here is the beam in the center of the room that we then had to drywall over. |

First project down! This was not totally a DIY project but sometimes you need the help of professionals!
